Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Kenwood KM800 Major Classic Stand MixerCustomer Review: Kenwood Major Classic 800 is the best! Summary: 5 StarsMay 12, 2008: Still going strong, and we use it almost daily for breadmaking purposes. Can't recommend it enough!
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Six years ago, we bought a Kitchen Aid mixer for $380. We returned it four times, because the motor either burned out within the first month (bread dough for our home) or came already burned out. Then we found the Kenwood Major Classic 800! What a blessing to us! It has run for six years now and never given us a moment of trouble. Makes heavy whole-grain bread dough like no bread machine or Kitchen Aid could. Easier to clean than the Bosch. Heavy stainless steel bowl is healthier for you and more durable than the Magic Mill plastic bowl. It does "walk" a bit on the counter when the dough is heavy, but a non-stick pad would take care of that. It is loud, but it only takes about seven minutes to mix a huge batch of bread dough (3-5 loaves). It doesn't mix two eggs or cream a single batch of butter/sugar--we keep a handmixer for that. We can't say enough good things about this mixer. I even let it "walk" off the counter one day (NOT on purpose, I can assure you)! It hit the floor, but the plug did not come out of the outlet--it just kept mixing! A small ding in the case was all the damage. I don't recommend throwing it on the floor, but just in case your back is turned for one moment too long . . . In our opinion, this is the ONLY mixer to own, and we paid $550 for it (before DeLonghi bought them out) and have never regretted the investment!
Description of Kenwood KM800 Major Classic Stand MixerWith 650 watts of power, rugged all-metal casing and gears, and a half-century of British engineering and experience behind it, this stand mixer--among the most powerful on the market--has an international reputation for reliability, versatility, and durability. Both it and Kenwood's 5-quart, 650-watt Chef Classic grace many a household and professional kitchen. All Kenwood mixers feature "planetary" action: tools rotate in one direction, while the tool socket rotates in the other, guaranteeing thorough mixing. In addition to the standard fixture for inserting beater, whisk, and dough hook, Kenwood mixers have three other outlets (concealed when not in use) to accommodate some 25 attachments such as a potato peeler, juicer, slicer/shredder, pasta maker, and sausage maker (the attachments must be purchased separately). Included with the mixer are a nonstick beater and dough hook, a stainless-steel bowl and balloon whisk, a flexible plastic spatula, a booklet containing 75 recipes, and a transparent, hinged splashguard (and dust cover) for easily adding ingredients during mixing. At 13-3/4 inches high by 16 inches deep by 9-3/8 inches wide (with the bowl in place) and weighing about 20 pounds, this is a substantial appliance. But despite its size and power, it is not intimidating to operate. As the instructions (admirably brief and clear) make plain, the mixer's virtues include simplicity. Push a lever and the mixer head pops up and locks. Insert, twist, and snap beater, whisk, or dough hook into place. (A simple twist unlocks them.) Lock bowl on its stand. The electronic speed control maintains constant power regardless of the load, and power can be adjusted through eight speeds--or pulsed--with a twist of a dial. Overloading automatically stops the mixer. To clean, wipe the outside and wash the tools and bowl in soapy water. Though the warranty against defects runs just one year, this mixer should provide a lifetime of kitchen convenience--and earn the neighbors' envy. --Fred Brack
